Taking Azithromycin for Bacterial Infections

Azithromycin is an antibiotic (macrolide-type) used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections such as ear infections, bronchitis, pneumonia and sinusitis. It works by stopping the development of bacteria within the body. It treats only bacterial infections and will not work for viral infections such as the common cold or flu. When this drug is taken needlessly or overused, it can lead to its decreased effectiveness and other serious problems. Azithromycin manufacturers make the drug in both tablet and liquid forms and it can be taken with or without food. It should be taken consistently throughout the course of doses in order to maximize the benefits of the drug.
